How it fits together
Why the evaluation comes first
Every major retrofit program works the same way underneath: an independent advisor measures your home before the work, and measures it again after. The difference between those two numbers is what the program pays for. No baseline, no claim.
That's why sequencing matters more than most homeowners expect. Insulating the attic in August and booking the evaluation in September means the attic work can't be counted — the model has no record of what was there before. A fifteen-minute conversation ahead of time routinely saves people thousands of dollars.
The order that keeps you eligible
- Pre-retrofit evaluation — establishes the baseline and produces your upgrade report.
- Confirm your program plan — which upgrades, which programs, which deadlines.
- Complete the upgrades — keep every invoice and product spec sheet.
- Post-retrofit evaluation — verifies the improvement and triggers the payout.
- Submit and claim — files go to NRCan and the relevant program administrator.
What tends to pay back first
In most Edmonton-area homes, air sealing and attic insulation deliver the best return per dollar, followed by mechanical upgrades and then windows. But "most homes" isn't your home — the upgrade report ranks improvements based on how your house actually performs, which occasionally overturns the conventional wisdom.

Rebate questions we hear a lot
Do I need an energy evaluation to get a rebate?
For the major programs, yes. A pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation establishes your home's baseline before work starts, and a post-retrofit evaluation confirms the improvement afterwards. Both are required to release program funding.
Can I combine Edmonton HERA and Canada Greener Homes?
In most cases the municipal and federal programs can be used together, since they're funded separately. The sequencing matters, though, so confirm your plan before starting work.
What happens if I start renovations before the evaluation?
Work completed before the pre-retrofit evaluation generally can't be claimed, because there's no measured baseline to compare against. If you've already started, get in touch anyway — we'll tell you honestly what's still eligible.
How long does it take to receive rebate money?
It varies by program and by how quickly documentation is submitted. The post-retrofit evaluation and file submission usually happen within about two weeks of the follow-up visit; the program administrator then processes the claim on their own timeline.
Are these programs still running?
Rebate programs open, close and change their terms regularly — sometimes with little notice. The amounts on this page reflect our understanding at the time of writing. Always confirm current details with us or the program administrator before you commit to a project.
